In the Model T Room

When Jim entered the Model T room at eight the next morning, Ahmed asked him what he made of what was on the white board. Jim looked and the only thing that came to mind was a tepee on fire. “Exactly, it could well be a tepee on fire,” Frank said to Ahmed. “Not that, no, look more closely.” Neither Jim nor Frank offered another guess. Ahmed frowned at Frank and then wrote above the squiggle of intersecting red lines with flecks of black marker: “B_ _n_ _ _ _ a _ .” Ahmed said, “that’s your clue. You finish it.” He handed the marker to Jim. Then Joan entered the room, looked at the board, and said, “Ahmed, did you go this year? When he nodded “yes,” she replied, “You should have told me, we could have left nothing behind together. . . including our sanity.”

Jim handed the marker back to Ahmed and took a seat while Ahmed erased the board and then wrote:

“Burning Man is a Function of the TWO SD Rule of Thumb Without God in the Mix”

Ahmed then wrote on the board “Darwin, cellular differentiation, and the role of environment.”

Ahmed asked Jim what he thought, and Jim offered that if man’s nature was “fixed and a constant, that meant that despite evolutionary progress. . .” at which point Frank interrupted Jim and added that “only man was capable of love and the good it brought about in the world, but. . .” and he in turn was interrupted by Joan, who said “there is no way around the fact that history shows that no matter the SD to the right or to the left of the median, that men and women are hard wired to be destructive, which is why we have still, even here at IPC, we have an HR department.” And Frank added, “Our very own savior, Mother Mary the People Coordinator.”

When the laughter ended, Ahmed wrote on the board, “And it was foreordained that Mary, Savior of ATAP, would send us James of MIT.”

Ahmed then handed Jim a printed list of topics that they would cover in the four weeks set up to bring him into the working ATAP group. The topics for weeks 1-4 were:

Thursday: Defining what is “meaningful work” in the context of today’s digital corporate world? What are the implications of social media driving the ever-increasing human-machine bondage?

Friday: Open exchange of ideas covering above topics
